Mission Statement

The Austin State Supported Living Center, Family Guardian Association, supports the creation of a nationally recognized, person-centered community that provides exceptional lifelong care for Texans with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our vision is to transform the Austin State Supported Living Center into a model of residential dignity, clinical excellence, innovation, and community partnership - honoring its historic legacy while establishing a new standard for compassionate, high-acuity care, workforce development, research, and family engagement.

Guiding Principles

• Who Austin SSLC Serves

Austin State Supported Living Center serves Texans with the most complex intellectual, developmental, behavioral, psychiatric, and medical needs, including individuals with profound intellectual disabilities, severe autism with dangerous self-injury, aggression, or elopement, cooccurring psychiatric conditions, and high-acuity medical needs requiring continuous interdisciplinary care.

• Person-Centered Community

Create a residential community where every individual lives with dignity, safety, purpose, and meaningful relationships. Neighborhood-style homes, therapeutic outdoor spaces, and welcoming gathering places will foster belonging while supporting each resident's unique medical, behavioral, and personal needs.

• Clinical Excellence and Innovation

Develop a comprehensive continuum of care that integrates advanced medical, behavioral, dental, rehabilitative, and therapeutic services within a coordinated campus designed to meet the needs of individuals with the most complex disabilities.

• Education, Research, and Workforce Development

Establish Austin SSLC as a premier center for teaching, research, and workforce development through partnerships with Dell Medical School, The University of Texas, the Rosedale School, healthcare providers, and community organizations - strengthening the future of IDD services across Texas.

• Stewardship and Legacy

Preserve the historic character and enduring mission of the Austin State Supported Living Center by protecting significant landmarks, honoring the families and individuals who shaped its history, and thoughtfully adapting the campus to serve future generations.
